An anthropologist would say that humans are hard-wired to see patterns and faces — it’s a survival instinct…

But what is the mysterious impulse to mark out the faces that aren’t faces so other people can see them too?

On the battered metal of this fire door in an alley in Pasadena, I wouldn’t call it survival instinct — maybe it’s art.
