Greene & Greene surprise

Detail of the facade of Crown City Loan and Jewelry, on the corner of Raymond and Colorado, Old Town Pasadena

A couple weeks ago I posted a photo of the window of this Pawn Shop but there’s so much more to this place than meets the eye, and it deserves a more in-depth look.

Because, this long-time Pasadena business (a business that I suspect the City would have loved to have relocated out of the Old Town area long ago…) has been hiding a secret unknown even to the owners.

What had been a rather unprepossessing looking place turns out to be the only Greene & Greene office building that they were known to design.

The shop immediately went from being from being looked at slightly askance by the locals, to being looked at one of the most valuable buildings in town.

An immediate historic landmark.

Here’s a link to the story from Curbed LA: “Pasadena Pawn Shop Owners fixing up Mixed Use Greene & Greene”

And here’s a little info about just who Greene & Greene are, and their importance to Craftsman Architecture and the Arts & Craft movement, plus more info on probably their most well-known creation The Gamble House.

If you’re in the area, it’s work wandering by and looking at the details that have so far been uncovered.

And I’d love to be given the chance to poke around inside…
